Sivan & David’s Engagement Session {Chicago Engagement Photographer}

Thank you Chicago, for your gorgeous views and completely unpredictable weather, somehow you were totally on our side! The morning of Sivan and David’s engagement shoot, a gigantic storm rolled through Chicago that brought a monsoon of rain, huge hail and tornado warnings into Indiana! We crossed our fingers and hoped that the storm would pass as quickly as it moved in, which turned out to be a perfect gamble. Just as we pulled up, the clouds rolled away and a bright blue sky emerged

Sivan and David love to travel which made the beginning of our shoot all too appropriate since it felt like we were on top of the world. We started on the roof top deck of the gorgeous Gold Coast building that David’s family lives in worked our way through the super modern lobby, (which I of course loved with its white couches and mirrored accents) and finally ended our shoot at sunset around the Kinzie bridge area. We had so much fun and even did some pictures that will be incorporated into the wedding (can’t tell you how, don’t want to give away the surprise!) Can’t wait for the wedding this November!

Caroline & Andrew Engagement Session {Chicago Engagement Photographer}

Walls and walls of fun!  One of the first things we learned about Caroline and Andrew is how laid back they are, which definitely came in handy when our first engagement shoot location (a cafe in Bucktown) was unexpectedly packed with people just as we were supposed to start shooting – eek! In the true spirit of rolling with the punches, these two shrugged it off with a smile and said “whats next?”. On the fly, we noticed an ivy wall around the corner that turned into one of the happiest accidents I could’ve asked for. As our shoot went on, one wall led to another (an ivy wall, a colorful wall and a vintage wall) resulting in true urban romance at its finest.

Caroline and Andrew were so awesome to work with. A Memphis girl and a Nashville boy, these two love UT football, having a good time, but most of all, of course – each other! They are so funny, super chill and uber playful (every time I had him nuzzled into her ear, he’d whisper something that got her cracking up!). We are so excited for their wedding this year at Architectural Artifacts – 80,000 square feet of vintage collectibles, a gorgeous couple and an amazing party – YES PLEASE!  Great job you two, enjoy!

Kate & Terry Engagement! {Chicago Engagement Shoot}

Kate and Terry met at a wedding, both sitting at the singles table! The comedy of errors on their first date of going to the wrong restaurant three times and Terry determined to find the one in which they had made reservations, may have started the evening off with Kate thinking she was on “Punked”, but once they arrived and the conversation got going there was an undeniable chemistry! And let’s be honest, considering Kate loves the way he makes her laugh, that multiple cab ride beginning to their first date actually worked in Terry’s favor, because in just a couple of months these two will be dancing and sending a wink to the singles table at their own wedding!

Kate and Terry’s wedding will be held out at the gorgeous Itasca Country Club this September, so they wanted to make sure they had a slight urban feel to their engagement pictures with some of their favorite Chicago spots! They did such a great job during this shoot, we just can’t wait for September!

Courtney & Dan Engagement Shoot! {Chicago Engagement Photographer}

They met through the alumni chapter of their business fraternity, but I think it was probably the sauce at Michael’s Pizza on their first date that sealed the deal (seriously, that sauce is magic!). One of my very favorite things about doing engagement shoots is that it lets us get to know a whole new side of our couples. Courtney and Dan are both so incredibly business savvy and smart. When we met them for our first consultation, we knew that they were the types of people who get the job done and look good doing it! The part of them that we didn’t know yet, and got to see during their engagement shoot, was this playful, goofy, giggly side that clearly makes them that much more perfect for one another! Dan would make funny eyes at Courtney sending her into a giggle frenzy and the only thing I loved more than Dan’s “call you out” sense of humor, was Courtney listing off songs from old Savage Garden albums – Hilarious! We had so much fun hanging out with them and getting to know them for this shoot. Courtney and Dan are getting married at the Hard Rock Hotel downtown in just 6 weeks! It’s going to be so amazing – we can’t wait.

Gregory & Michael’s Engagement Shoot at Room 1520

Modern, Stylish and Fresh – we LOVED shooting this contemporary engagement shoot. Gregory and Michael were just married this past Saturday, March 3rd, 2012, but we kept their engagement shoot a secret until after the wedding since we had them wear their wedding suits for this shoot. Our inspiration for this fabulous engagement shoot was both their wedding design concept and our location, Room 1520.

Both men have an amazing eye for design. Michael has an innate talent for fashion from both his training in school and currently at The Chicago History Museum and Gregory lives weddings and events at Jewell Events Catering and is wrapped in wedding style on a day to day basis. They tied in some personal touches, favorite colors and Michael’s affinity for Star Trek and comic books so we knew these two were bound to come up with something perfect!

A special thank you to Room 1520! We love shooting in this gorgeous space!

Thanks again to Room 1520, Halls and Windy City Linen for our furniture, equipment and linens.

Sheryl & Ian – Engagement (Chicago Engagement Photographer)

What a perfect shoot to post just days before Christmas! Sheryl and Ian were so much fun. When I first spoke with them about locations for their engagement photos, Sheryl was really excited about the idea of catching beautiful fall colors and a handful of holiday-esque images and wanted to go up to Gethsemane Garden Center up in Andersonville and what a treat for the eyes and camera! … Rich fall reds and vibrant yellows. Ian was actually most excited about grabbing a few locations that showcased the city so we wanted to end the shoot at Fulton’s on the River with a few landmarks in between including a fun stop at Water Tower.

We seriously couldn’t have asked for more beautiful light in November but it was November so it was chilly to say the least and I have to give Ian a special thanks for hanging in there while I kept them in the cold – such a trooper and so worth it for some great pictures. And for being such an awesome team player, I might have surprised Ian with a special treat at the end of the shoot… Earlier in the day he mentioned that Fulton’s had the most AMAZING Banana Cream Pie with Nutter Butter cookie crust.  So once we were wrapped and inside warming up I had the hostess bring out a slice of that spectacular pie! And while Eric and I couldn’t eat it (with the whole Vegan thing) I heard that it might have been the highlight of Ian’s day! 🙂

Thanks you two for such a great shoot! The wedding is exactly 7 months away! Can’t wait!

Jodi & Josh – Chicago Engagement Session!

Jodi and Josh are amazing people and absolutely perfect for each other! We like to say that Jodi and Josh are our 1 in 5 because they met on Match.com! And what a wonderfully perfect “Match” they are… Josh is Jodi’s knight in shining armor, the man she has always dreamed of and Jodi is Josh’s dream woman, the girl who makes him laugh out loud.  These two are so fun loving and easy going, you can’t help but smile when you are around them. Jodi is hilarious and has a fantastic sense of humor and personality for days. She loves to laugh and she just may be my sister from another mother because we both love infomercial workouts! Josh is this amazingly grounded, down to earth guy with a heart as big as the sky! He loves having a great time, and is probably about as kind and understanding as they come!

Jodi and Josh have a very special and very personal story of how they came together and while I wont go into details, I will say that their relationship was challenged very early on with news of family trauma and being separated by distance, but immediately their true colors began to shine through like diamonds and they each realized what they had found in each other. They were each others comfort and support and they realized that this is what it meant to love someone fully and unconditionally, to show compassion, to learn patience, to stand by them in good times and bad and in sickness and in health. It is only fitting and incredibly perfect that Jodi and Josh are getting married and I believe the world is a better place because of it.

As expected for their engagement shoot, we had so much fun and we can’t wait for their wedding this November at A New Leaf!

Shoot of the Week: Melissa & Donnie – engagement

Melissa and Donnie’s engagement session was so. much. fun. They are both originally from Cleveland, Ohio – Browns and Buckeyes, anyone? They met in high school and after graduating, Melissa traveled for school and performing, from Canada to Colorado, but as the years passed it was her love for Donnie and their amazing connection that tugged at her heart and brought her back to the Midwest. One magical winter holiday he scooped her right up and soon after put a ring on her finger! These two love to play, but really, that’s an understatement! It’s not uncommon that you will find Donnie coming home from a game of golf, carrying Melissa around the kitchen upside down and watching Browns highlights on Sportscenter… Or you may find Melissa watching an episode of I Love Lucy while trying to figure out how to fit herself into an antique suitcase. Throw in a beer, a glass of wine and a jumbo bag of Twizzlers and its a typical Friday for them! They love being together and absolutely love to laugh. It is so sweet to watch Melissa’s infectious giggle take over Donnie’s heart and make him melt… I’ve seen it! The love that these two share is so adorable, you can’t help but grin from ear to ear.

For their shoot, I have to send a special thank you to Terese, the founder of Candyality as well as the gals that helped us out at the Southport store, for being so personable and accommodating and letting us come in to take over the shop for a bit. We are so grateful for your help in making these pictures so memorable for Melissa and Donnie.  This post features our time at Candyality but you can check out highlights from the rest of our shoot in the fantastic video slideshow hybrid at the end. ~ Enjoy!

Shoot of the Week: Niki & Jon – Engagement

Niki and Jon are a true Chicago romance. They love each other and they love this city. With most of our clients living in Chicago, we love to encourage them to choose locations for their engagement shoot that are personal to their relationship. You might think that a downtown cityscape is just a pretty location, but for Niki and Jon it’s their life. They both handle Chicago’s picturesque and prime real estate on a daily basis. In fact, when I first met Niki and Jon and they began to talk about locations for this shoot, I jokingly asked if they would take me on a tour someday! I like to think that having lived here for almost a decade now, I know this city, but one conversation with them and I was enthralled with the stories of how pieces of this city were built.  They both appreciate the details, design and history of just about every building that adds to the windy city’s skyline so its no wonder they would want to be surrounded by its famous architecture for their engagement shoot.

We loved spending the afternoon with Niki and Jon not only because it allowed us to get to know their personalities better (there may have been a moment where their romantic gazes turned into a dance party as a party barge went past on the river!)  but it also showed us how special their relationship is and how much they adore one another.

… and almost as if we had shot on two different days, this crazy fog rolled in from Lake Michigan and blanketed the city. It was so surreal and created a really romantic vibe. I absolutely love that this happened, what a little touch of fate. There will be a very limited number of people in their lifetime that have pictures at the gazebo in front of the Drake Hotel with a dreamy, romantic fog. It almost made me want to move to the coast!

…and one last stop at Buckingham Fountain wrapped up our afternoon perfectly!

Congratulations Niki and Jon, we had so much fun with you and we can’t wait for the wedding!!!

Shoot of the Week: Elizabeth and Jimmy, engagement.

Welcome to our first installment of Shoot of the Week!

This week’s shoot is Elizabeth and Jimmy’s Engagement Session. I love how this shoot turned out… bright, bold, fun, vibrant colors, just like their personalities!

When we do an engagement shoot, it is really important to me to find our what the couple loves and what is unique to them as a couple and as individuals. Jimmy loves trains (model trains, real trains, any train!), soccer and is completing his schooling in violin making, and Elizabeth collects rocks, is an amazing art history buff and can remember historical dates like nobody’s business. They both really love the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago for its diversity, history, simplicity and just the warm feeling of home; so we did most of their shoot in that neighborhood… and a few down by the Art Institute for good measure.

One of the things I absolutely adore about this couple is their sense of play. There was never a dull moment and always a photo opportunity, it was fantastic! We had so much fun, at times I was laughing so hard my cheeks hurt!… in fact, it was funny because when we all first met they both were nervous that it might be difficult to get a great shot because Elizabeth is always on the move but this became one of my very favorite things about them! I loved that they were able to take simple posing suggestions and move around in them to make them specific to their personalities.  It created some really special moments and really awesome pictures!

Love, love, LOVE the graffiti under these train tracks! A little bit of romance mixed in with some art, perfect for these two!

Maybe its in the way he looks at her or how freely she hangs in his arms, but something about this moment melts my heart!

Here is an adorable example of that sense of play I mentioned!

  … and we had to get some train tracks in there for Jimmy!

Thanks so much to Elizabeth and Jimmy, we can’t wait for their wedding this July!

Some of the package additions that we offer are Slideshows or Video Slideshows of either your engagement shoot or wedding day coverage, the difference very simply being that the one includes video of the shoot. As a special treat, we used Elizabeth and Jimmy’s Engagement shoot to put together a little example of a Video Slideshow. Enjoy!
