I just googled the word ‘kitsch’ to make sure I was spelling it right and the Wikipedia link popped up with the following definition, “kitsch is a form of art that is considered an inferior, tasteless copy of an extant style of art or a worthless imitation of art of recognized value.” so…. I might say that these are kitsch-tastic!
Ahhhhh… I just can’t stop cracking up at these. Yes, we did take these pictures, but don’t worry.. they were edited into sheer cheesy-ness on purpose! These are some of our greatest and dearest friends, Derek and Katie. Derek was Eric’s best man at our wedding and Eric has known Derek and Katie throughout their relationship and we just love them to pieces. When they told us they were coming to Chicago for the weekend, the first thing I said to Eric was, ‘tell Derek we want to take their picture!’ and a clever Derek immediately retorted with, “shall we bring our matching black mock turtlenecks?” we cracked up and said “oh, of course!” Derek is the king of quip, so we thought nothing of it… until we met them in Millenium Park where we whipped out our cameras and they whipped out the mock turtlenecks!!! So, through hysterical giggles we tried to think of some of the most outdated, overdone, old school, cheesy poses we could think of… and these were just a few! … plus a little touch of reverse vignetting just adds that dreamy Olan Mills portrait style we all miss so much(note the sarcasm).
But, not to fear, I wouldn’t let them get away without a couple of gorgeous Chicago river sunset shots.
and of course… they wouldn’t let me get away without a little more goofiness!
BTW we also saw an amazing exhibit at the Cultural Center of Vivian Maier, a Chicago street photographer in the 50’s 60’s and 70’s. It’s only up through April 3rd,but if you haven’t seen, def check it out, it’s free, so there’s no reason to say no! So happy to have been able to spend some time with you guys and so wish you lived in Chicago! Thanks for such a fun evening!
Here’s one more for the road…~d
